Billy Elliot theatre breaks

Billy Elliot theatre breaks this winter

There are some great shows available for winter theatre breaks this year. I thought I’d do a round up, a mix of favourites and new shows, and a range of packages.

Six Shows for Winter 2012

Three Golden Oldies

We Will Rock You – The Queen musical just goes on and on, what with Freddie even taking part in the Olympic ceremony there is no sign of its popularity failing. The nearest you can get to a Queen concert these days with a cast that always gives their all to make the show work.

Billy Elliot – The heart warming, heart breaking story of Billy and his fight to fulfil his dreams never gets tired. The dancing has to be seen to be believed! It’s a great showcase for young talent too as the boys all attend Billy School and many have gone on to greater things.

Mamma Mia – we all loved the film, even if we won’t admit it but the stage show is a million times better. Not only that but all the male leads can sing! Set on a glorious Greek island it is great at transporting you far away from the chills of the UK in winter. Seriously, this is one of my favourite shows and it has recently happily made the transfer to the slightly more intimate Novello Theatre.

Three Newer Shows Worth Trying:

Viva Forever

Viva Forever! – The Spice Girls’ music and Jennifer Saunders wrote the book. What’s not to love about it? This one looks like really good fun.

The Bodyguard – Enjoy a bit of Whitney Huston in this jukebox musical adaptation of the film. This looks to be an entertaining mix of drama and music  with hits ranging from Queen of the Night, to  I Wanna Dance With Somebody and one of the greatest hit songs of all time – I Will Always Love You. I suspect a lot of joining in on some of these numbers!

Top Hat – now for a bit of class. Top Hat, was made famous by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers on the silver screen in the 1930s and it still sparkles today. I defy you to not come out of this show singing!

Breaks by train

Breaks by Rail, Coach, Car or Plane

Coach trips, Rail,  Self Drive or even by Air!

There are packages to suit everyone this winter.

There are two or three day coach trips where you stay in an outer London hotel and are ferried into the city. There are also 3 day dinner dance coach trips which look like good fun. There are even New Year coach trips, which would be a great way to recover from the Xmas chaos.

By rail you can choose from one, 2 or 3 night breaks. These are usually based in inner London hotels so there’s no need for a coach transfer. You can usually upgrade to 1st class for a £40 supplement if you feel like really treating yourselves!

Self-drive breaks can be even more flexible but still provide good value for money. Often based in inner London, so you need to be fairly happy driving in traffic. These breaks are often for Friday or Saturday performances, thus avoiding the worst of the weekday travel headaches.

Finally if you live too far away to consider other means of transport why not fly? These breaks are available from a range of Scottish airports as well as from Belfast. They include transport to a central 4* hotel and bed & breakfast. They are usually for a 3 days with tickets for a Saturday night show. It is a long weekend so you have lots of time for sightseeing and shopping.
